Some very sad news.

Hullbridge Councillor Michael Hoy has reported that Chris Morgan died last Friday.

Chris Morgan was one of the most significant people to have ever served on the District Council, and he served it for many years. He was a stalwart of the Labour Party, but liked and respected across the chamber. Chris spoke with natural gravitas, intelligence and humour.

If you were putting forward a proposal , if there was one councillor in another party you wanted to say you were right, it was Chris. When he was putting forward a motion himself, he didn’t seem to compromise on his principles – there was one occasion shortly before he was up for re-election when he supported a planning application, even though he knew it would lose him badly-needed votes.

He was an inspiration to many people.

He will be sorely missed, and our thoughts go out to his family.

Minutes of the first ever meeting of the District Council in 1973 - Chris Morgan was a member.

  • Chris is a great loss to Hullbridge. It was always Hullbridge first and foremost. He was an inspiration to a lot of us who become active in Hullbridge later on.
After being ill so long. May he rest in peace.

Christopher Morgan: Chairman of Hullbridge U3A June 2010 – April 2012.

It is with great sadness that we report that our Chairman, Mr. Christopher Morgan died the morning of Friday 6th April after a long battle with illness.

However, our sadness is tinged with pride with the way Chris continued to serve the community of Hullbridge with his involvement with Hullbridge Community Association and Centre, after 30 years of raising funds and getting Hullbridge Community Centre built, where he has a wing named after him.

He was Editor of the local community magazine ‘Ripples’ and, over the last two years with fellow village friends, he led the project in getting Hullbridge U3A started.
With his stewardship, and assistance from Rayleigh Trinity U3A, Hullbridge U3A took shape very quickly with over a hundred members and a number of Interest Groups soon being formed. This success continued with the membership numbers now reaching 270 by 2012.

Chris has a well-known history of public service as a Councillor with Rochford District Council from 2000 – 2004, where he served on a number of committees including the Hullbridge Sub Committee. He was Deputy Leader of his political party and a Member of the Full Council, all of which gave him the knowledge and experience to steer our U3A on to being a very successful Branch with over 40 Interest Groups covering a wide range of subjects.

Chris was wholly supported by his wife Kathy and an Executive Committee of Hullbridge U3A which culminated in a close knit group of people, some of whom hitherto were strangers, becoming good friends. This is testament to the camaraderie which developed due to his contribution and leadership throughout the whole of Hullbridge U3A.

Now he leaves a legacy of a vibrant and active Hullbridge U3A Branch that will now be part of Parish life for years to come.
