rawreth lane lights

We picked up recently on a complaint from a motorcyclist that his bike didn’t trigger the sensors at the traffic lights at the western end of Rawreth Lane. We’ve now had a reply from a helpful person at County Highways:

With regards to the traffic signals at the junction with A1245 Chelmsford Road/ Rawreth Lane.

I can confirm that a fault was raised and an engineer attended site on 27th June. Although no fault was found with the Rawreth Lane detection, the engineer did increase the sensitivity of the detectors which it is hoped will address the issue of motorcycles not being detected.

  • Well I have heard it all now, a motorcyclist moaning about the sensors. Maybe RDC will install sensors in everybody’s car to warn them that a motorcyclist is undertaking / speeding / riding like a complete idiot….is it me ?

  • Twice we were stranded with tractors and trailers at the lights ,had to wait till road was clear to get across into Church road .It was a bit hairy ,and very dangerous .There were many frustrated drivers behind us .It happened once after the 27 th.

  • Also happens when cars pull up a little short of the line to allow long vehicles to ‘short cut’ the corner when turning turning right (across) A1245 into Rawreth lane.
Have seen queues build up just because driver is nervous of pulling up near the stop line.

  • I have noticed that the right turn filter does not activate at all times at the junction of Rawreth Lane/Downhall Park Way that’s with a car to activate the sensor, its very hit and miss, can this be tweaked as well.

  • What might be useful for the right hand turn from Rawreth into DPW is a right arrow and stop line level with the centre line of DPW, it is a pain when people waiting to turn right do not move far enough across the junction, this causes the car/s behind to miss the green light. ( does that make sense ? )

  • If the turn right stop line is moved forward in Rawreth Lane, how would cars turning right out of DPW get out with the junction when it is blocked by cars waiting behind the stop line in Rawreth Lane?

  • Because either, there is no oncoming traffic so the cars can turn right, or they turn right once the oncoming traffic is held on a red light. We are only talking about 2-3 cars max, hardly enough to stop the traffic from turning right out of DPW is it.

  • I’ve spoken to the council about the filter light at the DPW junction in the past, and I think it is working as the council has designed it.

There are sensors in the road both before and after the stop line. If there are only one or two cars on the junction waiting to turn right into DPW, and they have crossed the stop line onto the junction, the right turn filter light will not turn green. However, when a car comes out of DPW and causes the lights on Rawreth lane to change to red, apparently there is a longer delay on the light from DPW going green, to give the cars turning right into DPW more time to clear the junction withouth the need for the filter light. This is the use case that causes people to think that the filter light is not working.

If there are enough cars waiting to turn right into DPW that they are on both sides of the stop line, then the filter light will trigger.
