At tonight’s’ Full Council meeting, free parking in council car parks on Saturday afternoons was SAVED.

Conservative cabinet member Mike Steptoe said that certain? contingency reserves were no longer needed, so there was no need to charge on Saturday afternoons…? at this time. When it came to a vote, it was overwhelmingly in favour of keeping Saturday afternoons free.

This is a great victory for everyone who campaigned against this . Don’t believe for a moment that? Saturday afternoons would have been saved without everyone’s efforts ! Pressure from opposing councillors and the public has paid off…

However , the increases in charges were still voted through.

Full write-up later when we get the minutes of the meeting.

  • Good news , albeit “for the time being” ( till after the General Election presumably )-
Shame only 15 members of the public attending in the gallery though!!!!.

  • Just read today’s paper – apparently the Lib Dems have convinced the Conservatives to firm up on an ongoing yearly committment of £12 billion on overseas aid , and here we all are debating Blue Card disabled parking charges /turning off street lighting and
a dire state of roads due to pot holes.
Am I missing something here – who are the morons committing to giving away our
hard earned money? – are we complete mugs in this country?.

  • Given the lack of clarity regarding the necessity for reserve funds to be accumulated and the lack of up to date financial information made unavailable for members to consider in relation to the resource implications of increasing (or not) the overall parking tariffs, perhaps a Motion to Rescind the decision to increase the parking tariffs is in order? I’m struggling to understand how members thought it appropriate to vote in favour of a policy which has financial implications without having relevant information to hand. I also find it quite disconcerting that there was no Finance Officer present during the meeting to answer members questions.
    You thoughts please….

  • Good news for us all, especially our town & village centres. Common sense has prevailed!
I have also had a positive response from RDC regarding a new street sign for Hartford Close/Maine Crescent, which I reported on Fix My Street. The new sign should be installed in August. Thanks RDC.
Thanks also to Toby Mountain who is trying to resolve the ongoing Tesco Express issues, with the support of colleagues, & is supportive of some sort of action to improve the traffic light junction at London Rd/Victoria Ave/Hatfield Rd. This follows the most recent accident, but so many drivers jump the lights, or cut across vehicles having the right of way, that more accidents will happen no doubt.
I have digressed slightly, but they are all “Highway” issues, & maybe go to show that at long last we are being listened to. Anyway, praise where it’s due makes a nice change.

  • Jim,
Don’t worry too much, after the next election Lib Dem Euro Claggy will be living in Spain with the in-laws…..possibly selling deck chairs on the beach. The man is a complete and utter idiot.

  • Toby, It is indeed baffling how a basically finance issue could be passed without a series of projections forward, as tp the possible affect the inctrease would have if usage ogf the car parks fell due to the increase. And inconpetent that no Finance Officer was present, or that Cllr Smith hadnt prepared his brief with this data

You are right to call for a “Motion to Rescind” which sounds like a medical condtion !!!!!

  • Jim Cripps, your eloquent rant about overseas aid is understood but all it shows is that national politics and local government shouldnt mix, that is why local councillors should be independant and only follow local issues

  • Toby @ 3 –
I’ve been trying to puzzle out how a number of decisions are made ( out of chamber ),
    for example –
The core Plan / Allocations Doc approved by the government inspector on a basis
Which included a new School and ‘ new and enhanced ‘ facilities for RTSSC – now
Both apparently cancelled ( by someone ? ) as it has’nt been discussed or voted on as far as I can see anywhere – another example !!!!!!.

  • Oz at 9 – Susan has resigned because of the way the party has handled certain allegations of harassment involving Lord Rennard. It’s a very personal matter ,and the allegations have no connection with our district. So I didn’t want to avoid the fact that she had resigned, but didn’t want to open things up for a whole chain of comments.

  • Yes, well said John , it is a particularly awkward subject right now , so fair play to Chris & Co for airing it – so I am not going to comment any further.
